Some White Wines worth remembering

For 20 years we have enjoyed the Montlouis AOC wines from

Berger Freres, Domaine des Liards, 37270 St Martin le Beau, France.

These white wines from the Chenin Blanc grape are of exceptional quality ranging from the apple scented Sec to the sweet, honey flavoured Vendange Tardives and Pineau de Grain Noble.   Good vintages of these wines last for many years and recently we tasted the 1945 vintage, a complex honey flavoured wine, ready for drinking.  Other excellent vintages were 1964, 1976. 1989 to name but a few.

Recent good vintages have been 1995, 1996, 1997 1999 and 2000.  The 2002 vintage promises to be superb according to Laurent Berger.

The Methode Traditionelle sparkling wines are soft and fruity, ideal as an apperetif, moorish.  The Cremant de Loire from Chardonnay grapes is luxurious with its own distinctive nose and good length.  It compares well in standard with good Champagnes.  Both these make excellent alternatives for occasions like weddings.

All the wines are excellent value for money, costing between £3.80 and £5 at the cellar.

This well organised winery is run today by Laurent Berger and his wife Jeanique.
